One thing I love about blogging about shoes is the unexpected emails I receive about designers I have never heard about. And it's the case with Lauro Righi, a designer who has worked for important italian shoe factories as Sergio Rossi and Casadei. From the 60's to the 80's, he ran his own brand producing hand-crafted shoes and bags in limited edition for the Italian, European, North American and Japanese market. Lauro Righi's son, Andrea, contacted me to present his father legacy and the Etsy shop where you can find prototypes or stock fund production from the 70's and 80's, new and never worn. So if you're like me, some kind of a vintage shoes addict, go and take a look. GOATSKIN

Tanned leather from goatskin is considered extremely durable and is commonly used to make rugs (for example in Indonesia) and carpet binding. It is often used for gloves, boots, and other products that require a soft hide. Kid gloves, popular in Victorian times, are still made today. It is used for a traditional Spanish container for wine bota bag (or called goatskin). Traditional kefir was made in bags from goatskin.

GOODYEAR METHOD

The 'Goodyear Welted' construction is a traditional method for the manufacture of mens shoes, taking its name from the inventor who mechanised the original hand sewn method. The essence of this construction is that the upper is shaped over the last and secured by sewing a strip of leather or 'welt' to the upper and inner sole. The cavity formed by the welt is then filled with a cork compound known as 'Flexofil' which is highly flexible and resilient giving a welted shoe its unique comfort. The process is then completed by attaching a sole to the welt.The stitched construction allows the shoe to be repaired many times by replacing the sole. The very nature of this method of shoemaking takes many weeks and can involve up to two hundred highly skilled operators creating a shoe of comfort, strength and durability.

Milan, 28 Oct. (AKI) - Italy's flamboyant prime minister Silvio Berlusconi on Thursday dismissed as “media trash" allegations of sexual antics with various women including a 17-year-old Moroccan girl called Ruby at his Milan villa during what he called “Bunga Bunga” nights.

Berlusconi replied to a question about the news reports during a news conference on the ongoing garbage crisis in the southern Italian city of Naples (which he said would be over in three days).

“I have a big heart and I try to help people in need,” Berlusconi said in comments broadcast live by Italy's Sky TG24.

“But I’m here to talk about real trash, and I’ll leave the media trash to all of you.”

Italian newspapers Il Fatto Quotidiano and La Repubblica have carried stories in the last two days based on claims by Ruby, an aspiring showgirl, who said she visited 74-year-old Berlusconi’s villa in Arcore near Milan three times when she was 17.

Ruby, now an adult, claimed she and other women, who included escorts and several cabinet ministers, were at Berlusconi's villa when the "Bunga Bunga" sex game was played. Berlusconi allegedly said Libyan leader Muammer Gaddafi had taught him the game.

She claims he showered her with gifts of Rolex watches and Bulgari, Damiani and Dolce&Gabbana jewellery and clothes as well as over 150,000 euros in cash. He said he would buy her a beauty parlour and told Ruby to say she was the niece of Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, the newspaper reports cited her as saying.

Ruby was part of a circle of aspiring models and actresses who were allegedly introduced to Berlusconi by a prominent show business agent, Lele Mora, and by prominent TV host Emilio Fede. Fede is 79.

The undocumented Moroccan teenager was picked up several times by police, suspected of theft and burglary. But each time, she was allegedly released after police received a call from the Italian cabinet offfice saying she was Mubarak's niece.

Magistrates cautioned that the Moroccan woman's claims might be with foundation and could be part of a plot to blackmail the premier or an attempt to launch herself into the media spotlight.

Prosecutors are reported to be probing Mora, Fede and Berlusconi's former dental hygienist, Nicole Minetti, for abetting prostitution.

Minetti was elected aged 25 as a councillor for the northern Lombardy region surrounding Milan.

Berlusconi’s lawyers Niccolo Ghedini and Piero Longo said in a statement on Wednesday that the allegations reportedly made by Ruby were "unfounded".

Berlusconi was previously linked to teenage Naples lingerie model Noemi Letizia, whose 18th birthday party he attended in 2008 and whom he gave a 6,000 euro gold and pearl pendant.

She said she called him 'Papi' meaning 'Daddy' in English.

Escort Patrizia D'Addario alleges she had sex with Berlusconi at his residence in Rome in November 2009. She released tapes of their encounter to media. Berlusconi has said he is "no saint" but has never paid a woman for sex or had "improper" relations.

Mr Berlusconi was elected as prime minister for the third time last year and, unless his parliamentary support crumbles, could continue in office until the next election in 2013.

"Silvio Berlusconi's decline may have begun, as his enemies and some allies speculate. But it is yet to be seen where or when it will happen and, above all, it is not clear who would benefit," wrote Massimo Franco, a columnist for the Corriere della Sera broadsheet.

What is certain is that Mr Berlusconi's braggadocio has failed to quell the clamour over the alleged sex scandals. In the latest escalation, it was claimed last week that over a five month period last year he hosted 30 young women at 18 dinner parties at his mansion in the centre of Rome, with some of them paid 1,000 euros allegedly to have sex with him.

The women, who included lingerie models, reality television contestants and young actresses, were recruited by Giampaolo Tarantini, a 35-year-old businessman from the southern port of Bari who is an acquaintance of Mr Berlusconi.

The lavish dinners, where the women were served champagne and given gifts of jewellery, were held during the period when Mr Berlusconi was involved in an attempt to rescue the national airline, Alitalia, from imminent bankruptcy.

Some of the women were eastern European and South American, raising awkward questions for Mr Berlusconi about whether his trysts could expose him to blackmail by a foreign power.

Prosecutors have gathered so much evidence, much of it leaked last week to the press, that the case is likely to go to trial, with Mr Tarantini, 35, accused of procuring prostitutes.

Mr Berlusconi himself is not under investigation and has denied ever paying for sex, with his lawyer famously insisting that the ageing Lothario would only have been the "end user" of any such services.

The Bari case has already revealed evidence that a professional escort, Patrizia D'Addario, 42, was paid 1,000 euros by Mr Tarantini to sleep with Mr Berlusconi at his residence in Rome in November.

She taped explicit conversations between them on her mobile phone and went public when the prime minister failed to keep his promise that he would propel her into politics and help her with a business enterprise.

Mr Berusconi is said to be contemplating legal action against her and claimed on Friday that she could face 18 years in prison for what he described as "four crimes" she had committed - though he did not elaborate.

As the besuited powerbrokers of Mr Berlusconi's party debate his future over conspiratorial meals in Rome's clubs and restaurants,

Mr Berlusconi faces a difficult few months ahead. Italy is deep in recession and the country's employers' federation warned last week that Italians should expect a further 780,000 job losses by next year.

In October the Constitutional Court is expected to rule on the legality of a controversial law pushed through last year, giving Mr Berlusconi immunity from prosecution while in office. If the court strikes down the so-called Alfano law, his immunity will be revoked. "It is his obsessive fear," said Marc Lazar, a political scientist.

In the same month, the British lawyer David Mills will launch an appeal against his conviction in May for accepting a £430,000 bribe, allegedly from Mr Berlusconi, in exchange for giving false evidence at two corruption trials in the 1990s.

But if his wife has abandoned him, at least some of Mr Berlusconi's family are still prepared to rally to his side. On Friday, his eldest daughter from his first marriage, Marina, came publicly to his defence. She said her father had been subject to a "lynching" by relentless newspaper reports that were nothing more than "inflammatory slander".

"There have been real attempts to stab him in the back, but happily he has good reflexes," said Miss Berlusconi, who is president of Fininvest, the holding company that controls her father's media empire, Mediaset.

"I know perfectly how precious freedom of the press is... but all freedom has a limit, which is respect of freedom of others. Journalists are free, Berlusconi is also. He is free to have a private life."

Michaela Biancofiore Celebrates Birthday With Berlusconi

Silvio Berlusconi proved he was on the mend after his attack by inviting a glamorous young Italian MP to a birthday celebration.

He has barely left hospital for injuries sustained in an assault in Milan last month. But the Italian prime minister, who bears scars to his face from the Dec 13 attack, was photographed beaming as he sat next to Michaela Biancofiore, a member of his People of Freedom party.

He invited her to his villa at Arcore outside Milan, where he is recuperating after a man with a history of mental illness smashed a souvenir of the city's Gothic cathedral into his face, leaving him with a fractured nose, two broken teeth and cuts to his lip.

The pair celebrated Miss Biancofiore's 39th birthday with a cake on which a cartoon crafted from icing depicted the young MP with out-sized breasts and a low-cut blouse and the prime minister with his arms around her, sticking his middle finger up in the air.

The caricature was a reference to a rally which Mr Berlusconi attended with the young MP in Bolzano, northern Italy, in 2005, in which he told jokes to supporters and raised his finger in apparent defiance of his political enemies.

"When he saw the cake, he laughed a lot, but it stretched the stitches on his face and that made him recall the attack," said Miss Biancofiore, who is a senior member of the prime minister's governing coalition in the northern region of Trentino Alto Adige.

She said that while she was afraid that the encounter might be subject to "gossip and slander", nothing improper had happened between her and the prime minister and that they were not alone during the birthday celebrations at his residence, Villa San Martino.

Mr Berlusconi had been "generous and kind as usual", she told the newspaper Corriere della Sera, adding she had ordered the cake herself.

Mr Berlusconi, 73, is being divorced by his wife of 20 years, Veronica Lario, 53, after a string of episodes involving starlets and showgirls.

He underwent a medical check-up at the weekend, with doctors saying he was making a satisfactory recovery.

His personal doctor, Alberto Zangrillo, said the billionaire premier had respected medical advice not to engage in any public activity, including cabinet meetings, for two weeks after the attack.

He is expected to return to public engagements at the end of this week.

These shoes are new, but these shoes are made in 1973. It's a contradiction? No, it's all true.

In the 70s Lauro Righi was the leading modelist of Casadei shoe factory and at the same time he produced footwears with his brand.

All Lauro Righi shoes are made in true leather: these wedges are made in python and calf.

The wooden heels are covered by one piece of calf leather. Only one piece of calf leather covers both heel and platform. Look at the wedges: you can see only a juncture on the internal side.

To make adhere the calf to the wedge ins't easy because the surface is full of curves, cavities and convexities. To give this shape to the leather is necessary heat up him and beat him by hand at length on the wooden heels.

In 1973 this pair of shoes was a prototype: a sample for the Milan or the Dusseldorf shoe fair.

Some prototypes are choosen and next there's a mass production, other prototypes remain prototypes.

This shoes, made in 1973, are never produced and sold: materials and manufacture was too expansive for a convenient commercialization. They remain the idea of a modelist.

Silvio Berlusconi urged to apologise after impromptu speech in which he also advises young Italians to marry into money
Faced with a tottering economy and a crumbling coalition government, Silvio Berlusconi has chosen to woo a youth rally with jokes about Adolf Hitler and his own sexual prowess.
Appearing relaxed, if a little pale, before a crowd of cheering supporters yesterday, the frequently outspoken and gaffe-prone Italian prime minister promised to see out the end of his term, despite losing his guaranteed majority after a split with an ally, Gianfranco Fini.
Putting politics aside, he then launched into a series of anecdotes and apparent jokes that promptly drew accusations of anti-Semitism and even mental instability from opposition politicians.
The former cruise ship entertainer told a joke in which Adolf Hitler is begged by his supporters to return to power after they discover he is still alive. After resisting, Hitler says: "I'll come back, but on one condition ... next time I'm going to be evil."
Fabio Evangelisti, a member of parliament for the opposition Italy of Values party, demanded Berlusconi apologise to Israel and the Italian Jewish community. The party's leader, Antonio Di Pietro, said: "At this point the problem is not political or judicial, but psychiatric."
Turning his attention to the economy, Berlusconi jokingly advised young Italians to marry into money, adding: "I have a daughter who is free to marry."
Now separated from his wife following the scandal over his friendship with the teenage model Noemi Letizia, Berlusconi said he was also an eligible candidate for four reasons: "I am friendly, I have money, legend has it I know how to do 'it', and lastly because girls think: 'He's old and rich, he will die soon and I will inherit everything.'"
The poor performance over the weekend of AC Milan, the football club he controls, was down to a leftwing referee disallowing goals, Berlusconi joked.
The impromptu speech followed a visit to Russia on Friday, where he surprised the audience at a conference on democracy with a fierce attack on Italian magistrates he claims are hounding him. He said of Vladimir Putin: "I have never had any doubts that he is anything less than democratically minded." Putin and Russian president Dmitry Medvedev, Berlusconi added, were "a gift from God" to Russia.
Last month, Berlusconi took time to defend Muammar Gaddafi after the Libyan leader told an invited audience of 200 women in Rome that Islam should be "Europe's religion". When the speech prompted outcry from the Vatican, Berlusconi dismissed Gaddafi's behaviour as merely "folkloric".
Berlusconi, 73, has previously been criticised for calling Barack Obama "young, handsome and tanned", and last year for leaving Angela Merkel waiting to greet him at a conference while he made a call on his mobile phone.
Despite the criticism today, Berlusconi claimed he was "a respected statesman who is praised at international summits for his background as a tycoon, his 16 years of political experience and the content of his proposals."
He said he had learned from Margaret Thatcher not to waste time reading negative coverage of himself in newspapers. The former British prime minister, he said, had told him that her press secretary only showed her positive articles about her.
Reign of error: Berlusconi's gaffes in office

He will have problems leading them"

Berlusconi is notorious for his questionable sense of humour.

In February 2002, at a European Union summit of foreign ministers, Berlusconi, who was present since the replacement of his previous foreign minister, Renato Ruggiero, had not yet been appointed, made a vulgar gesture (the "corna") behind the head of the Spanish foreign minister, Josep Piqué, intimating he was a cuckold during an official photo shoot. This is a common joke among Italian children, but many felt it was utterly out of place in an international meeting. He later explained that he "was just kidding", and was trying to create a relaxed atmosphere, that this sort of meeting was meant to "create friendship, cordiality, fondness and kind relationships" between the participants, and that he wanted to amuse a small group of Boy Scout bystanders.

On 2 July 2003, one day after taking over the rotating presidency of the EU Council of Ministers, he was heavily criticised by the German SPD Member of the European Parliament Martin Schulz because of his domestic policy and his alleged links to the Mafia. Berlusconi responded: "Mr Schulz, I know a movie producer in Italy who is making a movie about Nazi concentration camps. I will recommend you for the role of a Kapo. You are perfect for the part!". Responding to the shoutings that then came from the Socialist backbenchers, Berlusconi insisted that he was only joking, but soon after accused Martin Schulz and others leftish MEPs to be "bad-willing tourists of democracy". His comparisons with the Nazis caused a brief cooling of Italy's relationship with Germany.

In mid-May 2005, while opening the European Food Safety Authority in Parma (preferred over a Finnish location, after Berlusconi made an assertion of Finns "not knowing what prosciutto is"), Berlusconi claimed that he had to "dust off my playboy skills" with the Finnish president, Tarja Halonen, to convince her to locate the EFSA in Parma. This caused criticism from both Italy and Finland, with the Italian ambassador in Finland being summoned by the Finnish foreign minister. A minister of his cabinet later 'explained' the comment by saying that "anyone who had seen a picture of Halonen must have been aware that he had been joking". Before that, speaking to a group of Wall Street traders, he listed a series of reasons to invest in Italy. The first of them was that "we have the most beautiful secretaries in the world". This resulted in uproar in Italy, where, for a day, female Members of Parliament took part in a cross-party protest. Over the prosciutto comment, the Finnish pizza chain Kotipizza later came back with a new variety of pizza called Pizza Berlusconi, using smoked reindeer as the topping. The pizza won first prize in America's Plate International pizza contest in March 2008.

At a joint press-conference at Villa La Certosa (17 April 2008) in Sardinia with the Russian president Vladimir Putin, a Russian journalist from Nezavisimaya Gazeta newspaper, Natalia Melikova, put a question to Putin, asking him if he intended divorcing his wife and marrying Alina Kabayeva, an Olympic gold medalist and an MP in Russia. When his guest showed annoyance, Berlusconi intervened with a gesture toward the journalist that imitated a gunman shooting. The journalist was reportedly reduced to tears. Putin denied rumours that he was to marry Kabaeva. A spokesman for Berlusconi tried to play down the shooting gesture. He said: "It was just a gesture, a playful gesture, in fact it was appreciated given the technical time needed for a long and tedious Russian translation." Afterwards, Melikova said: "I saw Berlusconi's gesture and I know he has a reputation as being a joker. I hope there are no consequences." Vittorio Feltri, founder and editor of the right-wing newspaper Libero, argued that, given the records in transparency that Russia scores, Berlusconi actually 'saved' Melikova's life by making that gesture.

On 6 November 2008, two days after Barack Obama was elected the first African-American US President, Berlusconi "complimented" Obama on his "suntan":
" I will try to help relations between Russia and the United States where a new generation has come to power. I don't see problems for Medvedev to establish good relations with Obama because he is young, handsome and even tanned, therefore I think that a good cooperation can be developed.

Nikita Khrushchev's shoe-banging incident happened during the 902nd Plenary Meeting of the UN General Assembly held in New York on 12 October 1960 when the infuriated leader of the Soviet Union pounded his shoe on his delegate-desk.

Description of incident

During the meeting, head of the Filipino delegation to the United Nations Lorenzo Sumulong stated the following in reference to Soviet foreign policy:
" My delegation, the Philippine delegation, attaches great importance to this item entitled "Declaration on the granting of independence to colonial countries and peoples", the allocation of which is now under discussion.
We have been a colonized country. We have passed through all the trials and tribulations of a colonized people. It took us centuries and centuries to fight, to struggle, and to win our fight for the recognition of our independence, and, therefore, it would only be consistent with our history, our experience and our aspirations as a people that we vote in favour of having this item referred to the highest possible level of the General Assembly. While this is not the occasion to discuss the substance of the item, I would like to place on record my delegation's view on the import as well as on the scope, the extent, the metes and bounds of this item. We feel this to be necessary in view of the statements made at the start of our meeting by the Premier of the Soviet Union. It is our view that the declaration proposed by the Soviet Union should cover the inalienable right to independence not only of the peoples and territories which yet remain under the rule of Western colonial Powers, but also of the peoples of Eastern Europe and elsewhere which have been deprived of the free exercise of their civil and political rights and which have been swallowed up, so to speak, by the Soviet Union.

Mr. Khrushchev came to the rostrum, being recognized on a Point of Order. There he demonstratively, in a theatrical manner, brushed Sumulong aside, with an upward motion of his right arm — without physically touching him — and proceeded to demand that Assembly President Frederick Boland from Ireland call "the toady of American imperialism" Sumulong to order. The President did caution Mr. Sumulong to "avoid wandering out into an argument which is certain to provoke further interventions". Khrushchev pounded his fists on the table during the continued speech of Sumulong and even picked up his shoe and banged the desk with it. The Philippine Delegate was again interrupted. Now on a Point of Order, made by Romanian Foreign Vice-minister Eduard Mezincescu. The latter also managed to provoke and insult the Assembly's President to such an extent that Mr. Boland, crimson in face, turned off the Minister's microphone. The chaotic scene finally ended when Mr. Boland pounded the gavel (which shattered and bounced off), adjourning the meeting.
Other sources report a slightly different order of events: Khrushchev first banged the shoe then went to the rostrum to protest.

Mirabello speech

On 5 September, after a month of silence, Fini gave a speech to his supporters during the Festa Tricolore in Mirabello, a traditional rally of the late MSI and, later, of AN. During that speech Fini declared that the PdL was dead and that his group would not have returned into the PdL's fold, but he did not speak about the transformation of FLI into a real party. Moreover, despite being very critical of Berlusconi, he offered a "pact of legislature" in order for the government to continue until 2013, the natural end of the current parliamentary term. As a response, Berlusconi and his junior partner in government Umberto Bossi reiterated their call to Fini to resign from his post of President of the Chamber.
